Historic Cleaver Block 9th & Main Building in Caldwell by Erik Hagen

After opening up previously closed windows, and adding awnings and new windows among other things.

Before remodel

Recently completed update and tenant improvements to the Cleaver Block building in Caldwell, ID. 110+ year old building in Caldwell’s historic downtown, previously dilapidated and unused, our client purchased the property in 2021 and then hired us to help with the update and remodel, then also with the tenant improvements. What was once vacant now has Offices on the 2nd floor, a Yoga Studio and a Hair Salon on the Main Floor. Improvements included cleaning up the face, replacing and adding new historic modern windows and providing ADA Accessibility where none previously existed.

Community Engagement and Volunteerism by Erik Hagen

For the last couple years, since early 2021, I volunteered for the North End Neighborhood Association and stepped into the role of Planning & Zoning Chair. NENA was the first and is the oldest Neighborhood Association in Boise. As such, a lot of the projects in the North End are subject to the Historic Overlay Zone Guidelines. There are now about 34 NA’s all around Boise. About half of them are fairly active in what goes on in and around and affects their neighborhoods.

The P+Z Chair for NENA reviews Planning Applications that get a chance for public input and feedback. Some of these are simple, over-the-counter administrative reviews (Certificates of Appropriateness) that are over and done with in a week (like replacing windows, cutting down trees, etc.). Others have a longer review with a required neighborhood notification and meeting, leading to a public hearing in front of the City of Boise Historic Planning Commission and/or the Planning & Zoning Commission. If an appeal to any of these is filed, it then goes before the City Council.

NENA has two wonderful ladies that shepherd the Historic Planning applications and hearings. P+Z typically will hear variances, changes of use, subdivisions, planned unit developments, etc. These were all hot and heavy back in 2021, but have since cooled down a bit.

In conjunction with this volunteer role, I have taken on planning and hosting NENA’s annual Transportation Summit and Bike Rally. This is a community engagement opportunity for North Enders to come out to a park, play games, meet local organizations affecting modes of transportation in and around the North End, as well as learn about upcoming projects and programs. We end the Summit with a Bike Rally throughout the North End. Organizations that typically attend this one-day, afternoon summit are:

  • The City of Boise

    • Office of Community Engagement (Energize our Neighborhoods!)

    • Planning & Development Services

    • Mayor’s Transportation Advisor

    • May In Motion

  • Boise Bicycle Project (a non-profit that collects, repairs and gives bikes away to children in need)

  • Valley Regional Transit

  • Ada County Highway District (they control all the streets in and around Boise)

    • Safe Routes to School

    • Commuteride

  • Idaho Mountain Touring (local bike shop, performing bike repairs and handing out swag)

  • COMPASS (Community Planning Association of Southwest Idaho)

In September of 2022, I was appointed to the NENA Board of Directors by the current Board of Directors to fill a vacant seat on the Board. In November of 2022, I was then nominated to take on the Presidency role for NENA. As we are a volunteer neighborhood organization, this is mostly a symbolic role as well all work together to do the same thing. We have a wonderful and diverse board of local professionals, homeowners, renters and the like all working together to represent and help guide this wonderful neighborhood forward while respecting our past.

PARK(ing) DAY 2022 by Erik Hagen

You take over a parking stall, plug the meter with quarters and turn it into a park for the day. Or an office space. Or a music venue. Or a picnic area. Or a gaming space. Or a...

This year, we took over 3 parking stalls in total

We have expensive housing for people and free parking for cars. We have our priorities the wrong way around (…) We are killing our cities.
— Donald Shoup, Distinguished Research Professor in the Department of Urban Planning at UCLA

PARK(ing) DAY is a unique and exciting opportunity to engage in the ongoing dialog around how our cities are designed and built. It began as a guerilla art project and act of design activism in a single parking space, and has grown into a global movement, inspiring the creation of “parklets” and COVID-era “streeteries” in cities across the United States and beyond.

Every year in September, the world celebrates Park(ing) Day, the day when people around the globe will repurpose street parking spaces into tiny parks and places for art, play, and activism.

Uncle Bob's Pizza by Erik Hagen

Recently completed out at Woodland Springs Retail on McMillan at Locust Grove in Meridian, Uncle Bob’s Pizza is one of our latest restaurant concept design projects. ‘Uncle’ Bob & his son Ryan were awesome to work with. Real hands-on and knew what they wanted. And boy, did we deliver! Just be careful looking at their website and Instagram posts, because you’ll soon be heading out there for some Pizza & Beer!

Uncle Bob’s Pizza started out as a dream and a need. Uncle Bob and his son, Ryan, are huge sports fans that appreciate a great establishment where people can gather and feel like they are at home. After seeing a need in Meridian for something like that, they teamed up to build and open UB’s. They put their blood, sweat, and tears into what UB’s has become.

Giving Back - Boise Rescue Mission Sonrise Manor by Erik Hagen

We are proud to donate our time and services to helping the Boise Rescue Mission on converting the old Heritage Assisted Living Center at 1777 S Curtis Rd in Boise into a new multi-generational transitional living community. The renovated facility will be combining rooms into family quarters, completely upgrading the kitchen and food service facilities, adding an additional 60 family living units for those in need in Boise.

“For many people, the Transitional Living Program provides a supportive place to live while working toward their own safe and stable housing situation. Sometimes they need to establish a work history, develop a resume, earn money to pay off debts, or clean up their credit history. Whatever they might need, the Transitional Living Program provides the environment to help those people accomplish their goals“

~Rev. Bill Roscoe

We are happy to be partnering with Engineering Consultants, EKC Construction and BSR Food Service Design on this pro-bono project. More information can be found at BoiseRM.org.

Congratulations Morgan! by Erik Hagen

After a year of working at Erik Hagen Architecture and going to Graduate School at the University of Idaho, we are proud to announce that employee #2, Morgan Monson has successfully completed her Masters of Architecture degree from the U of I.

“Our world is in a constant state of flow, channeling weather, people, nature, and energy. However, the current discourse of architecture continues to be focused on comfort and stability, allowing for an environmentally detached enclosed built world. This thesis focuses on finding a response to the way we build, treating 'flow' (specifically in people and nature) as more than an obstacle or background; to design with it. The following project will study certain aspects of the experience of moving through a building and within the landscape of the city and its natural elements. The architecture will become a type of narrative, certain systems overlapping or flowing to lead occupants on experiential journeys.”

Abstract, Morgan Monson May 2022

Here are some of the artful snippets form her Graduate Thesis project: The Ceaseless Discourse of Architecture & Flow. A case study of public performing art and community spaces and how life and humanity flow through and around the built environment.

Picking the prime location for her project at River Street between 8th & 9th along the Greenbelt, Morgan carefully integrated her project respectfully with the existing Anne Frank Memorial and The Cabin.

Congratulations Morgan!

Bringing the Ocean to the Mountains by Erik Hagen

Oashan Shrestha visiting one of his favorite Calatrava Buildings in NYC

Please join us in welcoming Oashan (sounds like Ocean) Shrestha into the fold. Oashan joins us from Nepal via the University of Idaho Graduate of Architecture program.

Market Village - M.Arch Senior Project

After getting his Bachelors of Architecture from the Nepal Engineering College in Bhaktapur in 2015, Oashan practiced architecture in Nepal for 4 years before coming to Moscow, Idaho to get his Masters. Along with some amazing food, Oashan also brings a great talent for 3D graphic visualizations. He’s already put it to great use on a number of our projects.

Nepalese Resort Village - B.Arch 3rd Year

Oashan is extremely interested in public spaces and how to positively influence individual experiences thereof. He takes this personalized approach into each project along with vernacular influences for a cohesive and thoughtful design.

We’re so excited to have Oashan onboard and he has already proven to be an integral part of our cohesive team.

We're So Excited To Be Downtown! by Erik Hagen

280 N 8th Street, Boise ID 83702

Taking the advice of our peers, we tried to stay working out of the house for as long as we could. But as the projects kept piling up and hiring more talent, we found we were bursting beyond the seams of our small home office space into the dining room and that we needed to make a move. If not just for us, but for our clients to be able to come and have a conference room to pour over the designs and models.

Knoll adjustable desks, credenza’s and horse power partition via Sprague Solutions

It’s been taking a couple of months to get things up and running down here, but we have a great daylit office with views of the Capitol & old post offices, the foothills and some great graffiti art and building super-graphics. As with anything, there’s always more that can be done to complete the office, but for now we have some a perfect space for meeting and collaboration, great coffee & milk-frother, plus a full-size pool table! Not to mention the awesome assortment of absolutely fabulous restaurants, coffee shops and bars just outside out door. Feel free to stop in anytime to discuss architecture and planning or just to shoot a game of pool. Or join us après le travail for craft cocktails at Boise’s worst kept secret speak-easy Suite 104 where the ice-cubes are handcut.

We sure miss the office cat & dog though.

Not Going Back to the Way It Was by Erik Hagen

As we move back into the office, we are working 9-5. That includes lunch, breaks, errands, etc. We are aiming to work less than 40 hours a week, and live more than 80 hours a week! We’re taking long lunches and coffee breaks. We’re stopping to watch the people out the window. We’re stopping to smell the flowers. Were taking better care of ourselves, and at the same time, taking better care of our clients.

And Now We Have Two! by Erik Hagen

Morgan Monson.JPG

Morgan is another proud Idaho native, coming to us all the way from Melba south of Kuna. Aside from architecture, Morgan likes to spend her time with her family, staying in Silver City, creating works of art, listening to music and generally being awesome.

Another future architect coming to us from the University of Idaho College of Arts & Architecture, please join us in welcoming Morgan Monson to the team. As she completes her studies for graduation later this year, Morgan will be spending most of her time getting to know all the ins and outs of an architectural practice. From proposals and code investigations to design, documentation & construction.

One Line.JPG

As part of her architectural education, Morgan had the opportunity to create a special project for Style Her Empowered (S.H.E.) in Togo, Africa. Including an in-person, hands-on design & construction experience.

SHE.JPG
The project goal was to design spaces for young women to go, learn, feel safe and enjoy life.
— Morgan Monson for S.H.E.

Always looking to use her hands in the name of architecture and design, we’ll definitely have to take Morgan up on her physical model making skills for some of those hands-on client meetings. Below is one that she created out of cardboard for the Elysian Natatorium project as part of her 5th year of studies. Manipulating light for moody spaces to come alive with beauty, peace and divinity.

We are proud and excited Morgan has chosen to start her architectural career here with us at Erik Hagen Architecture. Welcome Morgan!

City of Boise Planning & Zoning Commission Unanimously Approves Planned Unit Development by Erik Hagen

All over the country, the cost of housing is soaring, while the availability is dropping. Boise is far from the exception here, more like leading the race for housing shortages. Converting 88 fairly unused hotel rooms in a rundown Howard Johnsons into brand new efficiency studio apartments is the next wave of housing. Soon to be The Prospect, we’ll be improving the property, adding in more trees and landscaping, BBQ areas, bocce ball, cornhole. And on the inside, doing a full gut and remodel. Rearranging things a bit to get a small sink in the bathroom so that the vanity can become a kitchenette, With the adaptive reuse of this structure, the cost savings over building from scratch are enormous. Not to mention the savings on raw materials and diversion of potential landfill. Focusing also on resident health, safety and welfare, providing new high efficiency, high rating air conditioning units, seals on doors and windows along with greater sound attenuation, long-term retention of residents being the focus. Installing products and materials that don’t have harmful off-gassing, no formaldehyde, low VOC’s, new Low-E glazing.

The Cost of an Architect by Erik Hagen

What I've noticed these potential clients are most interested in is: Can it be done and for how much? In fact, my Google Analytics point to as much.

These are both questions I am more than happy to discuss & propose on and often times I do, at my expense, for hours per client.

Lo and Behold! A Hidden Message in Erik Hagen's Architecture! by Erik Hagen

64228-full.jpg

Do you know where the internet was started? Or when the first internet connection was made?

Well, neither did I until I started doing research for a new Student Creativity Center in a palm court breezeway underneath the Henry Samueli School of Engineering & Applied Sciences Boelter Hall in 2011. And what I found out inspired me to sneak a hidden message into the project.

Rendering12.jpg

When the campus architect at the time, Jeffrey Averill FAIA rejected my idea for an undulating facade with a strange mixture of punched openings, I pushed the idea to the bottom of a drawer and almost forgot about it. But I held on to if for some reason. And when the opportunity came last minute to try and tie in new floor tile within a decades old existing pattern (hint, it can’t be done, they’ll never match!), I dug down and pulled out my idea and was able to implement it into the floor tile pattern. And then I got busy on the next project and promptly forgot about it. Until several years later, the phone rang and there was a reporter from the UCLA Newsroom.

Pandemic at the Office! by Erik Hagen

How is COVID changing the practice of business.

Toxic black mold, something that we have been trying to address in our buildings for years. Trying to accommodate an aerosolized virus is not unlike trying to accommodate toxic mold. A lot of the same measures, air control, containment, etc. come into play.

In a reversal of environmental concerns, we’re seeing reusables being denied and single-serving utensils, flatware and disposal items are now sadly overflowing our garbage cans and gutters. This as an opportunity for that sector to fully embrace biodegradables. And maybe, once and for all, the US and Idaho in particular will learn how to recycle ALL the recyclables.

This is all leading to a downsizing of office space or readjusting offices into a more of a shared, traveling desk scenarios allowing for more hiring and expansion without expanding office space.

Pedo Mellon a Minno by Erik Hagen

MiddleEarth_091419_0620_sz-1024x689.jpg

In 2017 when we won the interview for the Middle Earth Housing design/build project at UC Irvine, it was all we could do to contain our excitement and finally gush about how much of a Tolkien geek we were. I mean come on, the project was Two Towers on a Hobbit Hole landform base and we had hid images of Gandalf in our renderings.

As is customary, I always like to sneak in a little gem within willing client’s projects. In this case, the design team was skeptical, but the client loved it. Prominently shown in the image above (it will soon be hidden behind the cascading terraced water feature and landscaping).

One would definitely have to be a bit of a Tolkien folklorist to make the connection upon finding it anyway. But, my hopes, perhaps like the binary code I snuck into the Boelter Hall Student Creativity Center, these weird characters cast into the concrete planter wall will peek the curiosity of enough visitors to research the characters and find the meaning behind them.

It is Middle Earth after all. So, speak friend, and enter.

Erik Hagen Architecture Gets Fired Up! by Erik Hagen

My design aesthetic is firmly rooted in Scandinavian simplicity, warm woods with hard concrete, plain lines, logical masses. My main focus is to mix a little modern with a little traditional and always try to hide a little gem in each project. Capture the daylight and accentuate the views. Add in some industrial and farmhouse and you are starting to fill out the edges and see the type of architecture that also brought me to Boise.
